The Camping and Caravanning Club is celebrating the centenary of the first ever commercially-made caravan designed to be towed by a car with a competition to win a caravan and awning worth £26,500.

The first caravan built on a commercial scale was an Eccles and, 100 years on, entrants could win a Swift Eccles 560 with Lux Pack and a Vango Vienna 400 awning together worth £26,500 in the competition, which has been launched at the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show, NEC Birmingham, from 19-24 February 2019.

The Swift Eccles 560 has been refined for 2019 and the limited edition model pays tribute to caravan styling through the decades. A limited edition 100th anniversary graphics scheme adorns its new streamlined aerodynamic profile while the inside features new soft furnishings and an exclusive woodgrain.

The original Eccles caravan first rolled off the production line at Eccles Motor Transport Ltd in Gosta Green, Birmingham in 1919 and The Riley family, owners and founders of the business, went on to promote caravanning on a global scale. Eccles Motor Transport Ltd was bought by Swift Group in the 1990s and the Eccles has been manufactured at the company’s manufacturing plant at Cottingham near Hull ever since.

The Vango Vienna 400 awning is new for 2019 with contemporary styling and AirBeam technology making it quick and easy to inflate. It has large windows and is designed and developed for long term use.

Robert Louden MBE, Director General at the Club, said: “2019 is the year of the caravan and the Club is heading up the celebrations with this competition to win a caravan and awning - perfect for exploring the great outdoors.

“In the hundred years since the first caravan as we know it today entered commercial production, hundreds of thousands of caravans have rolled off the lines and given millions of people wonderful memories that last a lifetime.

“Caravanners tell us they can hitch up and go exploring at a moment’s notice, giving them real freedom to enjoy quality time with friends and family. ’Van life is highly popular and a way of life for many thousands of people.”

According to the National Caravan Council (NCC), £1.64bn was spent on domestic caravan holidays in Britain in 2017 and it estimates that approximately 555,000 touring caravans are currently in use in Britain.
