2012 NFOL Cancelled

The Camping and Caravanning Club has announced the cancellation of its annual national camping rally, National Feast of Lanterns, due to adverse weather conditions.

The continued rainfall has waterlogged the temporary campsite at Long Newton Grange in Stockton on Tees and made it inaccessible to vehicles. It is almost impossible for any of the infrastructure needed to create the campsite and its entertainment facilities to be installed on site.

Stuart Inness, Chair of the 2012 NFOL Organising Committee, is disappointed to cancel and he said: “We’ve dedicated four years towards planning this event and we’re absolutely devastated however we’ve got to consider the safety of members.

“Hundreds of campers from across the country had pre-booked a pitch so we had to make the decision to cancel the rally, earlier rather than later, in order to cause minimum disruption to campers’ holiday plans.”

The Club’s Director General, Robert Louden, added: “The National Feast of Lanterns has been running for many years so it’s such a shame we will not be able to celebrate this Club tradition in 2012 however the safety of our campers’ is paramount.

“I’d personally like to thank the members of the 2012 NFOL Organising Committee for their efforts and professionalism; we appreciate the work that has gone into organising such a large event, it’s just unfortunate we’ve experienced such unpredictable weather.”

All campers who have pre-booked a pitch at the rally will receive a full refund.

It's about time the club realised that farm-type sites are no longer suitable for this sort of event, it needs to be held on a showground with level pitching and proper roadways. Caravans are bigger, motorhomes are heavier, than in days of yore. At least they they had the sense to cancel this time instead of waiting for the chaotic scenes at Bangor 10 years ago to be repeated!

Even showgrounds are struggling with ground conditions this year - unless a venue has acres of hard-standing for car parking then the weather is an inescapable issue.
And if we do have the change of weather permanently like they all keep predicting, maybe that's what the show grounds will have to look at doing
Will this spell the end of caravaning as we know it ?
-- pitches being constantly damp [wet] and only able to take the lighter type of van.
-- Or traditional grassed areas being concreted over to make "hard-standings" for the large caravans and motor-homes?

-- Will caravans and tugs be forced to get smaller - so as not to damage what ever grassed areas are left?

-- Will there be an influx of larger second hand caravans on the market as people get fed-up with muddy site conditions, and opt to go to Spain instead.
Any widespread use of surfacing material will have to be of the porous type - rather than run off into drains - as it's the overload on surface drainage caused by ever-increasing areas of the country being "built-up" which causes flash flooding.

It can be done at greater expense by allowing rain to soak through "hard" surfaces to be absorbed by the ground underneath - as they do with all new road projects by using porous asphalt.

Mind you we've had so much rain this summer that the ground is not just saturated but overwhelmed.

Big events may be having issues because the availability of temporary roadway hire materials is low this year, having been block-booked by the Olympic organisers - I know of site contractors who need temporary roadways to move heavy equipment but can't hire it for love nor money.

Great Yorkshire Show which is largest in country was cancelled after one day..even tractors were stuck and this is a ground that is used to handling heavy vehicles.......

Shame for organisers and (non) atendees alike. We went to NFoL @ Bleinham a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed
Have been meaning to try to include the NFOL in our schedule for a few years now...........hopefully next year!
