Comet Roma Tap

Question

Posted

Hi All,

I've trawled everywhere for a replacement cartridge for the above mixer tap (fitted to a Hobby) to no avail. Waiting for a reply from Comet in Germany but wondered in the meantime if anyone knew of a UK supplier. Usual suppliers dont seem to carry this cartridge.

Cheers In Advance

Paul

Hi Beejay,

650umfe. kitchen sink tap. Its not a filter I need but the mixing cartridge. One of the flat plastic lugs on the top of the cartridge has snapped allowing water to bypass the lower seal out through the tap body. I have received an email reply from Comet in Germany advising that their UK didtributor will be in touch. Nothing heard as yet.

Ring a company called "Rose & Company (Hull) LTD I found them very helpful on another difficult to find German product. They came across as principal importers for Comet. There was a minimum charge which might mean a replacement tap makes more sense.

01482 328231 I dealt with Tim and Steve.

Hey Hey, If you did go down the new route i may be interested in your old tap, Mine has a crack in the lower body of the tap,But othewrise fine, It did leak a little but a tight cable tie has cured it for now!, I would of course pay for S/H tap. Last year i saw one or two on Ebay thinking that was my problem, Worth looking on there, Seem to remember they interchange with another make ??

Cheers fish,

I'm probably just goin to get a new tap, if so you can have the old one with pleasure in which case I'll drop you a PM.

There are two reasons I was looking to replace the guts rather than the tap: 1. Getting to the locknut that holds the tap to the basin is a nightmare. Locating the nut isn't the problem, its getting it undone that causes lots of swearing. 2. Dont know if you ever came across the German equivilent of a jubilee clip, but they are impossible to remove. Will have to cut the pipes probably, unless another Hobby owner has found a removal tool for the pipe clamps.

You could buy the new one and just change the guts over, avoiding a van rebuild; then share the cost with "fishman" for the redundant body. Both parties win?

Is the tap fitted in such a way that it can be removed sufficiently with pipes still on to get better accesses to the pipe clips? Either back up through the mounting hole or downwards.

I could with my Hymer as that was piped with flexible tubing and they allowed enough slack for that after removing a couple of securing clips.

I had to make a compact plywood spanner to undo and redo the nut working with it totally blind.

Hi Heyhey, On my 650 i removed the fridge vent from outside giving me a bit of room to access, Dont know if your layout similar, Some of those clips as beejay says can be awkward but seem to remember a GOOD pair of sidecutting knippers will cut off the crimped bit and loosen them but take care, from memory theres a good bit of loose pipe so maybe cut off and remove old bits when taps are out, Sometimes if you can get your fingers on base nut tap can with care be turned/wiggled till nut comes loose,Or as bejay says normal tap wrench, Bejay do you mean bathroom basin tap ???? Wonder if difference is just the spout ?? My spout fine Base cracked,

Cheers for the replies.

Yep, tried two different basin wrenches, still got rerstricted access, having removed the drawer, microwave and the drawer under the microwave. Think the new tap with removed innards is the way forward as I dont have to fiddle with the lock nut.

As for the hose clips - yep I've experienced them before on the Truma water heater, they truly are a gift from the devil. Why such a robust clip is fitted to a plastic, low pressure pipe is beyond me, but hey in Germany if four nuts will do the job, lets fit 5 !

On my van it has two comet roma, Sink has long spout, basin has short spout, From bad memory carefully prize out the little red blue badge from top of tap, Remove screw,And handle pulls off, Underneath lies the cartridge I THINK they turn and lift out, But its a while since i did it, Apparently there are 28 and 35mm cartridges but dont know if its bathroom and kitchen or just pot luck, Just need to strip and measure, There are also some rubber O rings Three ??? Under the cartridge that could cause a prob if broken/split. I am just going to have a look at your sink tap link, But only ever seen Romas myself,

Cant see that clearly but! I am nearly certain comet roma spout is jointed near tap end and spout will twist left or right to direct water spray, The ducal one looks solid ???

Ok Guys,

Heres the deal. The tap body comes apart no problem, undo the screw in the lever, access the cartridge, twist and remove, easy peasy. Been there done that. Now another little caveat.

Once I've got the cartridge in my sticky paw I look at it really closely. I'm amazed to see that a Reich cartridge will fit - hey well done me. Not so. The bit thats broken is the fixing collar thats fitted to the top of the cartridge. The bit allows the cartridge to turn and lock into position, the bit with 4 lugs thats fastened with a tiny pozi driv screw.

So next question, having seen the Reich cartridges on fleabay, none of them have the locking collar fitted. Is it supplied with one?

Cheers

Paul.

beejay,

Its actually the tap body that turns. If you look closely you'll see the plastic flange with 4 lugs, these lugs locate under those moulded into the tap body. If you turn the body a quarter turn the cartridge will lift out through the body. Once its out you'll see two small nipples which locate the cartridge correctly into the base of the tap. I need the plastic flange thats fastened to the cartridge with the tiny pozi driv screw. One of the lugs has broken causing the cartridge not to seat flat on the O rings on the underside. Result is a leak from the bottom of the tap which runs down the microswitch wires.

I do seem to remember i did take out screw first ??.Doesnt the screw stop it it twisting?? Then the cartridge presses and turns,I am not at my van for another couple of weeks so cant measure but think its just the spout length thats different, My main body has split where spout connects causing a dribble for a while after turning off, I have got a fancy (chrome) jubilee clip round bottom and it workds fine now but I cant even bare to look at it! Hate stuff not right so basicly my problem is Tap Main base,It would be of course as it means removing the lot, Just cant remember ring being seperate, But then again old age buggers the memory LOL Just let me know what you decide Beejay,Deff interested, You are dead right about them being plastic, Look good but crap im afraid,

I wonder  We mostly use tents caravans and motorhomes so yet another Static park just doesn't shake my tree I really feel their narrow gapped ranks of uniformity are horrible We are really looking forward to getting a motorhome so that next year we can find quiet lonely places and stop not having to worry about whether we are aligned on pitch or whether the hook up is in reach of our cables  So we will not be visiting this place but thanks for giving us the information so we can steer clear
