Time for a new battery

Question

Posted

I've decided to invest in a new leisure battery for the caravan. My original 110 amp one was recently fitted into our new van, but it couldn't cope with the Motor Mover.

Although I've topped up the electrolyte, which was seriously lacking, I suspect it's had it & I'm going to take Doc's good advice and replace it.

I would really appreciate some advice on this. I've just been looking at Elecsol Carbon Fibre batteries, which seem to be very good, but somewhat expensive (c ?97 + VAT, for a 110 Amp one!)

Are they worth having at that price, or for the purposes of caravanning are they a bit OTT? If so, what's a good make?

Up until now, I've always left the van connected up to the mains on our driveway, thus the battery presumably receives a constant trickle charge. Is this the best way to treat it to ensure maximum life, or should it be regularly charged/discharged?

The information I'm getting from various places seems a bit contradictory, so I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Those carbon fibre batteries are priced way over the top. A local caravan dealer has 110 amp batteries on sale for ?40!!!

There's a whole thread on this subject /index.php?showtopic=2543">here. And I'm sure Doc will keep you right on the merits or otherwise of constant trickel charging!!

previous reply lost in the ether I think.......

Tony,

maybe worthwhile to give Bailey a ring as we were told that the battery box on our Oklahoma is unsuitable for a 110ah battery. It being too heavy and a very, very tight fit.

We have an 85ah which works fine with the mover.

Ours is a 2002 model so there may have been some tweaks in this area but still worth the phonecall and they are nice people to talk to.

 Thanks for that Ron.

Gordon's links were really helpful, & I've taken on board Doc's point about C/F batteries. Guess a standard type of Leisure battery from a good make will suffice.

::D: Well John C, I lashed out on a new 110 amp battery today. It fits in the Bailey's battery box, but only just! The Electsol one wouldn't have fitted, too long.

I've just spent a happy half-hour properly trying out the Carver Mover on my drive.

Forward, back, turned the van completely around ,then back again. Just like a prima ballerina!

My neigbour thought I'd gone completely bonkers!!!

Tony,

that's good, maybe it was the Electsol which Bailey were concerned about.

Anyway, its fits and works so good luck with the new van.... and battery!

I’m off again on Thursday and hopefully getting more. That fish was my first from this water for a long time. I left the club about 15 years ago. There have been a lot of changes since then especially in the fish size apparently there are at least 20x20s and 4x30s. So I am hoping for something a lot bigger
