We changed to a motorhome in May after over 3o years caravanning and after 40 plus nights away in it have no regrets. We opted for the half dinette layout with a fixed bed as we like to take our grandchildren away occasionally so need the extra 2 belted seats. We tend to sit in the two front seats (swung round to face the rear)'as they are like sitting in armchairs and are very comfy. We have used the motorhome both on minimum facilities CLs and rallies plus the odd full facility site. We have a 100 litre on board water tank (sited between the floors and well, insulated) and an 80 litre waste tank slung below but with a 12 volt heater for freezing conditions, so we,can manage 3 to 5 days without filling up. The motorhome is 3500 maximum weight, has plenty of storage including a good size garage under the bed and a large space between the two floors across the rear of the vantage, is 6.95 metres without the bikes on the rear cycle rack. It is easy to drive, the 2.2 engine has plenty of poke - climbs steep roads with hardly a falter, we get 30 mpg on a long run, probably about 27 on the windy steep, roads,up,here!
One thing to watch is that UK manufacturers quite often quote more berths than there are belted travel seats.

We miss the large bathroom of our last caravan and the Alde heating but not enough to want to change back. We can now use France Passion sites, Aires and Stellplatz when travelling in mainland Europe giving us a much greater variety of overnight stops. We did have motorhomes in the early 90s for a couple of,years but that wasn't the right time for us, now is! Love driving on,to,our, pitch, switching off,the engine, turn on the gas and that's it - no,hassle at all!

Can think of a few council owned sites up here that could do with a club style upgrade. We have quite a few links sites which have had very little money put into them, prices are similar to club sites though. Banff links & Portsoy both could do with a major upgrade.

Unfortunately we wouldn't use them next year either. We have made arrangements for a prolonged trip to US so the vouchers are no use to us. thanks anyway.

    Eurotunnel Vouchers
I have £240 worth of Eurotunnel vouchers purchased with Tesco vouchers - it looks as if we may not be using them this year, anyone know if it is possible to transfer these vouchers to someone else? Hate to think we are going to waste them completely.

  7. JanB added a post in a topic Metered or Un-metered EHU?

Maybe rather than metering electricity CLs could offer a lower amperage to keep costs reasonable. 6 to 10 amps would be ample for most caravans. Many of us manage on lower supply levels on sites in France or even the odd CL in this country.

Agree Sonja - that is the joy of touring, if you like somewhere - stay - if not just move on and find another site. Life is so organised it is lovely to just "go with the flow".

Yes you can use a normal aquaroll on the Unicorn, the onboard is a back up for extreme cold.

After the war the French government gave them a more or less rent free apartment in Paris, they paid no income tax etc - he wasn't the most ethical of men, rumours that he was involved in illegal currency dealing surfaced at times. They also spent time in New York, think their lifestyle was rather profligate, very different from his brother.

Maurice - look at ADAC, it would probably be more suitable for what you want to do. They are also very good, used them for years when we lived overseas.

We are away at moment until the 3rd. We have a few weeks in Texas booked from mid February. Got vouchers for Eurotunnel but haven't decided on dates yet. Definitely going to Greenock for the tall ships early July and Twinwoods end august. Otherwise we don't book ahead just arrange something when we feel like or have time to get away. We only book ferry or Eurotunnel if going across the channel and then just go where we fancy and stay as long as we want. Don't like to be too organised, like to be free move on if we don't like somewhere or stay longer if we really like the place. Met our best friend this way - stayed at the AFRC campground Chiemsee for an overnight on the way to Italy 30 or so years ago - he was opposite us, had such a great time we ended up staying 3 weeks, wouldn't have dove that if we had somewhere booked and would missed some amazing times since.

Yahoo - new van now sitting on our drive. Maurice turned on heating (on electric) 30 minutes and it was fine & cosy. Admittedly arcade a near tropical +1 degree, assume it would have taken longer a couple of days ago but quite good enough for us.
