This is how to measure a caravan for an awning.

The "A-A" measurement is easily done by running a length of string from the ground, around the awning channel to the ground at the other end. Lay the string out straight and then ACCURATELY measure it in centimetres (cms). This will be the size of awning you require for your caravan.

Most awning makers have sizes in ranges. For instance, you may measure your awning as 934 cms. A maker may offer 950 which is 925-950 range. Another will offer a 960 which is 930-960 range. The size ranges may differ, but the principle is still the same.

In any case, armed up with the exact measurement of awning you require, a dealer will be able to easily advise you on what size range to get and you are less likely to make an expensive mistake.

I find the cockpit of these makes very basic and am totally underwhelmed at the quality and spec. Needs must so I'll have to put up with it. Best VFM I've seen so far is the Elddis Autoquest 115 "fully loaded" (yeah right!) at an eye watering £38k which is a good £9k cheaper than anything else I've seen. Why is it that I set a budget of £30k and need to spend 50% more than that on the one I want (not the one I need)? :-/

The investigation continues but the longer this goes on, the more I convince myself I WANT ONE!

Something to ponder whilst lazing on the beaches of Zante next week.

    Shiraz time, good weekend all.

    Gray,

We don't regret selling the caravan and the big tow car at all. Miss it a bit at times during the nice weather weekends which doesn't happen too often.

No, the caravan just wouldn't suit for what we are intending to do with it next spring and beyond. We are also still loving the Juke which is as cheap as chips to run.

Like Alan, we have looked at loads of different models. The big compromise for us is the thing must fit on my driveway as I don't want to incur any storage costs and being on the driveway, I can play with it all day long. But, this restricts us to the babies like those mentioned. We just need to find "the one" for us but it's not easy, nor cheap. You don't get much motorhome for £30k !

Cheers Jill. This is not quite cast in stone just yet but, dare I say, we are getting a tad giddy about the idea.

    Considering A Return?
Been a year and a half since we sold up the caravan and tow car and now considering a return with a motorhome to tour Europe (particularly Greece and Italy) in 2014 and maybe an over winter in Spain later in 2014 as we start to wind down and ascend into semi to early retirement.

Had a wonder around Brownhills and front runners amongst the contenders so far are the Elddis Autoquest 115 and the Auto Sleeper Nuevo as these actually fit onto me drive! Prefer the Nuevo as it's better kitted out but could only afford a used one.

Jury is still out and still contemplating this. No rush as we wont buy until after next winter.

    Any thoughts?

No one is allowed to mention Navara in my house!

30 mpg? Only managed 18 mpg towing, 28mpg solo with ours (when it actually worked!).

Destination? Skeggy, of course! Now THAT is the caravan capital of the world, also used to be my favourite.

I've had both Suck It and See and Milenco mirrors. No contest! Milenco mirrors are superior by far.

Drive safe and have a great time.

Jubilee! Add that to the Olympics for something else we can ill afford. However, with the amount of immigrants we seem to now have in my street, we've decided to put the flags out in spectacular fashion and play 633 Squadron and other Battle of Britain tunes on a loop, out front. Upsetting the neighbours natives? You bet!
