Road tax on our 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is about £240.  The 2006 version which came out 4 months late is identical and gets clobbered with the £495 tax.
Sometimes I pretend to be normal, but it gets boring so I go back to being me.

I think we need to keep this all in perspective, after all we are talking  an extra £200-£275 or there abouts per year, a major conponent failure in any vehicle will make the difference pale into insignificance. A previous company owned 3.5 year old VW Touran experienced a major gearbox failure, by the time that this was replaced together with the flywheel new clutch etc, the bill came to 5K, its now my wife's car and costs £175 a year to tax. I am not saying that my current car could not suffer the same or eqivalent failure, but it does help to put it all in to perspective. Its not all about the  cost of the road tax.
Regards Paul.

Still reckon it's time to scrap road tax and put it on the fuel, the more you drive, the more you pay, the more gas you guzzle, the more you pay, if you use a tug for tugging, your quids in, and Johnny no tax, be he a boy racer of and a forgeiner over here, he still pays his share.

The tax disc was the final nail in my land cruisers coffin.

Last year I was paying £475 on the land cruiser and £130 on the soul.  so £605 a year. (and a combined 33mg over 35,000 miles)
This year its £170 for the superb and £30 for the altea. total £200 (and a combined mpg of 52mpg over 35,000 miles)

costs in 2012 would have been £600 + £6300 fuel = £6900 before servicing and depreciation
currently £200 + £4000 = £4,200.

almost £2,700 a year saved and the servicing costs have reduced as well.....and both cars are under warranty (soul had 9 months left of its 5 year cover)

Don't enjoy towing half as much as I used to but then I hardly do any to be honest.

but then - offsetting this is the fact that the older vehicles are (usually) easier to repair being less reliant on modular components which have to be fitted by a main dealer using special tools and computers......

You all ought to move to France where there is no road tax, no matter what size the vehicle or engine it is fitted with and where the fuel (well diesel) is far less expensive and the roads are a zillion percent better, insurance is less and the MOT is only every 2nd year........................

Ah! the grass being much  greener and no road tax.......................

Wonder how may ex-pats would return if they could sell up?

I suppose that all depends on how serious their health issues are.  Currently amongst the ex-pats I know there are several with health problems and they are those who would prefer to be amongst their loved ones on their homeland soil.
