If you live in the area just thought that you would like to know that they no longer charge for towing a caravan over the bridge.  You only pay the toll for a car which is £1.50.  We thought this was quite a bargain!

There has been a campaign from the people on the South..........Grimsby area

Apparently if the local hospital cant cover it they are sent to Hull so they have to use the Bridge.........I think the tolls have actually reduced or maybe the annual increase hasnt been applied

The tolls have been reduced recently but we did not realise that the charge for caravans had been removed altogether - it used to be about £5.60 to take your caravan over.

Way back in the early 1970's my wife typed the tender document for British Bridge Builders Consortium for this bridge.......before it was finished I was having to commute between ships in Grimsby & Immingham and Hull Docks........one long long day!

Yes - it's been like that for quite a while now (possibly March 2012).   We've been over a few times this year as it's now not so pricey to have weekend in Lincoln.

Approaching from the South, I think it is perhaps the most magnificent sight as it slowly grows bigger and higher the closer you get, eventually passing between those enormous pillars that a short time before had been no more impressive than a pair of cocktail sticks!.

I'd say that's well worth any toll for the privilege of eventually passing over it Posted Image

For several years I used to design and produce the pictorial calendar for Dunlop Tyres for which I used to commission paintings by various artists.  One year the annual theme was one of bridges and so it came to pass that a painting of the Humber Bridge was commissioned.
After the production of the calendars each year we used to mount and frame the paintings and put a suitable inscription on it before they were then given as cherished gifts to various noteworthy clients of Dunlop.

The one of the Humber Bridge was given to the chairman and founder of a large Humber based transport company and the inscription on it read "That F'in Bridge" !

It should have been completed in my last year at school in 1976 and we would have had an excellent view from the top of our teaching block,  It was eventually opened in 1981.  I remember being on holiday in New York when a tour guide rather disdainfully mentioned that it was thought a bridge bigger than any of theirs (heaven forbid!) had been built in the Uk - we confirmed this fact very loudly.  It's a very impressive structure - more should be done to sell it as a tourist attraction really.

We went to the first Children in Need which was held in the Park under the bridge at the Hull end.

I dont think it was called Children in Need in those days....was it Telethon or something. Recall it being a good day out but I cant remember when it was, maybe around 1988.

Why was it built? It doesn't seem to have benefitted any local economies on the Lincolnshire side - was it just to allow Hullensians to escape?

It's an awfully long way around the river if you have to drive!  The ferries were old and outdated and I understand that the idea of a bridge had been around for a long long time.  It was said at the time that it was a bridge to nowwhere but I believe it has benefitted the economies on both sides.  People travel over to work and Kimberley Clark built one of their factories on the South side which provides employment for people on both banks of the Humber.  Quite a few also moved over to the south side as the housing was cheaper as they could now commute.   As a leisure facility it's a lovely stroll over on a nice day/evening as well!
