Can my accounts programme and other programmes (that I use on my laptop) be loaded into an Ipad?

In a word No!
There are accounts programmes but are not worth it. You will still need to use your laptop. iPads are good for sending emails and following the Internet plus you can load all you music on.
The operating system is Apple and not Microsoft Windows.
I am using an iPad talking to you now

You cannot do anything with an I Pad unless Apple say you can, ie you have to purchase and run EVERYTHING through them, this is what i meant in my previouis posts about it being far too restrictive. If you have music files purchased and downloaded from anyone other than I Tunes for instance, forget it they are useless on an I Pad. (although i am told there are illegal ways of converting the files, but why should you have to?).

down the Apple route forget others at the moment....

OK -- We do like the i-pad and at the moment are confused as to why you need a Sim card and subscription to one of the mobile phone Co's.?

Also there seems to be two types ---  one where you can log on if you have a Wi-fi access  ---- and the other that logs on anywhere??? is that right???

the cost thing -- are there "educational discounts"  ie teachers and schools etc --- like some software???
We did look on the web site but couldn't sort it... be good if there is.

thanks for all the help

Maurice

Maurice, if you are a CO-OP member you will receive a 5% discount, point, and free delivery on the Ipad3.  The card is free for you and i can send you an application form if you are interested. I always like something for nothing, so it wouldn't hurt to have it anyway Posted Image   Just PM me your address and i will send it off to you.

Just been to PC World/Currys and looked into the iPad and general tablet market.

Considering that they cost far, far more than a laptop which is YOUR OWN and can be loaded with any programme that you like, these tablets are an expensive load of rubbish. The 7" ones aren't big enough anyway, and the 10" ones are too big to be mobile i.e. in your pocket.

A laptop has a HUGE hard disc drive, you can fit extension hard disk drives to it which you can backup to easily. Tablets typically have 16Gb, and cannot be backed up.
Laptop memory is slightly bigger than 1Gb, and storage a lot bigger than 16Gb.
The operating speed of a laptop is hugely faster.
I have two digital cameras, and my photos are easily transferred into my laptop, and can be showed on the screen.
I can use skype from my laptop.
And a laptop is equally mobile.

Why on earth would I need a tablet?

I must be missing something here ............

Nonsense. The only music file type you can't play on an iPad is FLAC, and these can easily and legally be converted. In truth, most computer music files are MP3s of various quality depending on compression and an iPad plays these just fine.

Restrictive? Take a look at the number of Apps available for iPad/iPhone & compare with those for other platforms.

Actually, I'm getting the clear impression that a tablet is just a dumbed down computer. And so EXPENSIVE!
You have to give apple full marks for their marketing though - it is Brilliantly successful!

There's obviously a lot of knowledge out there on the forum re tablets etc - so - can anyone tell me if any of them (including Ipad, other tablets and the new Kindle Fire) - have slots for CD cards and USB? We're looking at something  from 7" screen up. One of it's uses will be to instantly display (to school trips etc) photos and videos from a remote sensor camera.

iPad definitely not. However you can get a camera adapter which works well.

Phil.
I've imported audio and video to both iPhone and iPad - you just need to import the files into iTunes, and then synchronise (you'll probably need to convert video files beforehand.)

But it's true that Apple won't let you run any software that hasn't been approved by and supplied through them. This is one of the reasons why they won't support Adobe Flash, as it has evolved from a simple video player into something that you can actually 'program' and write apps in. Apple are worried that, if they reject an application from the app store, the developer will simply write it in Flash and put it on a web page.

Android, on the other hand, encourages you to buy through their 'Google Play' store, but allows you to install apps from third party sources if you wish. You have the option of playing it safe (having Google's vetting of apps) or doing away with the safety net and installing applications from unknown sources. Be aware that there is malware out there - apps that secretly send premium rate texts and rack up your phone bill, for example. You could liken it to wearing a seatbelt - Android has a warning (like your car probably has, beeping at you if you drive without your seatbelt) whereas the Apple car won't start (unless you jailbreak and sideload, which voids your warranty.)

So, you pay for the iPad, and they then control what you can do with it.
On that basis, you can buy a car, but only go where the car manufacturer says you can. Oh boy!
Big brother?
