There are accounts programmes but are not worth it. You will still need to use your laptop. iPads are good for sending emails and following the Internet plus you can load all you music on.
The operating system is Apple and not Microsoft Windows.
I am using an iPad talking to you now

Phil.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright, until you hear them speak.

OK -- We do like the i-pad and at the moment are confused as to why you need a Sim card and subscription to one of the mobile phone Co's.?
Also there seems to be two types --- one where you can log on if you have a Wi-fi access ---- and the other that logs on anywhere??? is that right???
the cost thing -- are there "educational discounts" ie teachers and schools etc --- like some software???
We did look on the web site but couldn't sort it... be good if there is.
thanks for all the help
Maurice
Maurice, if you are a CO-OP member you will receive a 5% discount, point, and free delivery on the Ipad3. The card is free for you and i can send you an application form if you are interested. I always like something for nothing, so it wouldn't hurt to have it anyway

Considering that they cost far, far more than a laptop which is YOUR OWN and can be loaded with any programme that you like, these tablets are an expensive load of rubbish. The 7" ones aren't big enough anyway, and the 10" ones are too big to be mobile i.e. in your pocket.
A laptop has a HUGE hard disc drive, you can fit extension hard disk drives to it which you can backup to easily. Tablets typically have 16Gb, and cannot be backed up.
Laptop memory is slightly bigger than 1Gb, and storage a lot bigger than 16Gb.
The operating speed of a laptop is hugely faster.
I have two digital cameras, and my photos are easily transferred into my laptop, and can be showed on the screen.
I can use skype from my laptop.
And a laptop is equally mobile.
Why on earth would I need a tablet?
I must be missing something here ............

Nonsense. The only music file type you can't play on an iPad is FLAC, and these can easily and legally be converted. In truth, most computer music files are MP3s of various quality depending on compression and an iPad plays these just fine.
Restrictive? Take a look at the number of Apps available for iPad/iPhone & compare with those for other platforms.

They are not intended as a replacement for a laptop!!!!
My wife would never touch a computer but when I bought her an Ipad I can't get her off it. Horses for courses..........

But it's true that Apple won't let you run any software that hasn't been approved by and supplied through them. This is one of the reasons why they won't support Adobe Flash, as it has evolved from a simple video player into something that you can actually 'program' and write apps in. Apple are worried that, if they reject an application from the app store, the developer will simply write it in Flash and put it on a web page.
Android, on the other hand, encourages you to buy through their 'Google Play' store, but allows you to install apps from third party sources if you wish. You have the option of playing it safe (having Google's vetting of apps) or doing away with the safety net and installing applications from unknown sources. Be aware that there is malware out there - apps that secretly send premium rate texts and rack up your phone bill, for example. You could liken it to wearing a seatbelt - Android has a warning (like your car probably has, beeping at you if you drive without your seatbelt) whereas the Apple car won't start (unless you jailbreak and sideload, which voids your warranty.)

On that basis, you can buy a car, but only go where the car manufacturer says you can. Oh boy!
Big brother?
