you have the legistlation reference and the wording that denies what you say. Have you any comment?

I think his resort to personal insults again says it all really shame, i would have expected better from a real cop!.

It's just possible that Surfer worked for the South African Police Service before coming to the UK - not that that helps to understand UK law.

Hi all

New to the forum but been following this topice with interest.

I have a Elddis Avante 526 with a plated MAM of 1500kg and I own a Honda CRV 2.2 diesel with a plated MAM of 2146.

I passed my driving test in 98 so only have Cat B. Will I need to sit a B+E test for this set up?

I know the max is 3500kg and the total above is 3646kg putting me over by 146kg which seems a bit harsh for me to have to sit a test for. Is there any way round it?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S I haven't towed yet with the above set up but the father in law has!

Legal limits are always harsh - over by any amount is illegal - the intention of the legislators is for people to stay below limts.

The only legal way round is to take your F-I-L with you and use L-plates although there are less practical options like changing the caravan for a lighter one..

Hi wagonwheel. Although you state that you have not towed with this outfit you don't say whether you have ever towed (A Caravan) since passing your test.
If my assumption is correct it sounds very much like you have not towed a caravan before.
Therefore my only observation is that you want to bend/manipulate the Law &  Rules & Regulations before you have got any mileage under your "Bedding Boxes"
Learn to Walk before Running.
Happiness is a well matched outfit & a forward planned jaunt.

I have towed trailers for a few years just never a caravan. I am planning on taking a caravan towing course in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the response. I'll have to look into sitting the E test now.

Can you post up how you get on?  A lot of folks seem scared to death of even reading up on it, let alone actually taking it!  Some friends of ours used to have a late 80's Sprite with a MTPLM of around 1100kgs towing it with a Frontera with a maximum weight of 2405kgs.  They were only over by 5kg but would still have been illegal, in the end he "lost" his chassis plate from the caravan and had another one made that appeared to have been a bit lighter.......

From what I've heard on car forums, it's little picky things that can fail you on the +E test.
