We tasted wines from the vineyard in St Emillion among other places bought them got them home and then found them disappointing inconsistent , and that is bottle to bottle from the same vintage . so now we stick to consistent mass produced wines A sommelier would most likely go mad at that statement , but that is why there is such a choice no 2 persons have the same taste in wine
Anything from Georges Debeuf we find consistent, Flurie , Morgon, Fitou , in particular
With regard to JP Chennet , Carrfore are doing BOGOF on red white and rose right now
On his French Odyssey Rick Stein recommended Picpoul de Pinet with shellfish , so we bought some and I found the taste, err, weird ,
BUT this year in Agde ,tried it again and it tasted fine , so producers , vineyards , years all affect your opinion .
I know this is a FRENCH wine thread , but there are new world wines that are better , now that would be a bigger longer thread I think
But to finish my favourite wine is Muga Reserva Rioja ( Spain Obviously )

We buy most of sloshing plonk from Le Clerc and it is amazing how many of our visitors end up buying loads of these 5 or 10 ltr boxes before returning to the UK.

If you like a very nice fruity but crisp dry white wine, then my most Wonderous lives on this stuff at the rate of at least 5 ltrs per week !

VIEUX CARION, Colombard-Sauvignon, Cotes de Gascogne.  It is in a greenish box and 5 ltrs costs about €11.50

My sloshing glugg is by the smae company: -

VIEUX CARION, Pays d'Oc, Merlot.  It is in a burgundy coloured box and can be bought in either 5 or 10 ltr sizes with the 10 ltr costing about €18

As I wrote earlier so many of our visitors try them when we are holding one of our boooooozie boules evenings and end up not only drunk as skunks but also going out over the next day or so to buy a boot load of them.

Oh and whilst we are on about booooozing, I like my beer and have tried all of the ones on sale over the years and now come round to my own personal very inexpensive brew obtainable from LIDL, GraffenWalder STRONG and strong it is at 7.9%.  It comes in a 500cc tin at an amazing price of only 0.47€ a tin.

Following a serious incident of Boules Rage some years ago,( we still haven't found the cochonnet from that set,) I set out the Rules for our guests.

Alan’s Rules of Boules

1. Anyone playing without a drink is disqualified.

2. Inventive cheating is permitted.

3. Disputes concerning the distance from the  cochonnet are mandatory.  Nobody’s word
is final.

4. Play stops when darkness falls or the
players do likewise

5. Extra points can be awarded for barracking at the discretion of the umpire

We find it works for us.

That's it upset me by reminding me

I can no longer drink any alcohol (Thank Pancreatitis for that)

As for wine when I COULD drink it then we tended to drink Spanish (the Auchan sell it at 1€ a bottle)
but as for local couldn't beat -

Pineau  from Pitou Charente a mix of wine and Cognac served tres-fraise

and not too expensive compared to boutique labels that so many Brits go for not thinking they could get twice as much better wine by looking around

Pineau..........now that jogs the memory

First had some when I bought a load of wine at a Cave somwhere near Rouen. They gave me some glasses (St Sulpice) and a bottle of Pineau. Still got the glasses. The pineau was pink and I hadnt a clue what it was. Tried it, loved it so went back for more and took loads home.

Next year a different place so went in search of pineau but we could only get white, still nice but not as nice as the pink.

I used to describe it as French Sherry so by the sounds of your description I wasnt far wrong. I didnt know it was a mixture.

Never seen it in the UK

Pineau is a drink of Charente (after Cognac) and once out of that area it's not so common and it is like a French Sherry

the Rosé (Pink ) is made with Red Wine and Cognac
the white is White Wine and Cognac

We obviously get it around Mirambeau / Montendré when we stop at Twin Lakes (at the end of next month LOL)

My most Wonderous isn't able to drink alcohol unless she takes her daily booze pill (as she calls it).  She has been on them now for over 20 years.

Her problem is she suffers from Gastroesophageal reflux disease which can loosely described as one of the valves at the top of her stomach not being able to close properly and hence allowing acid back up into her pipe, but with the daily tablet duly administered she can drink her crisp white Cotes de Gascoigne till the cows come home !!

making me think of a holiday just to get some

Pastis 51 is that like Pernod? strange stuff that Pernod, quite like one sip but more is too much.

just slipping back to the original thread for a moment...........The zoo at Royan was a memorable moment as there is very little between the people and the animals. The monkeys have mesh tubes that pass over the walkways. Woman in front was grabbed by the hair by a monkey sticking its arm through the mesh.
The parrots were all over and there were giant tortoises that the kids could sit on and ride. There was an Ostrich looking over a fence and a Rhino with just a small fence seperating it and if I recall the Elephants had nothing but a shallow ditch.
That was probably 20-25 years ago so I guess its been H&S purified by now

oops just realised this is the wine thread

Pastis is the generic name for aniseed liqueur Pernod is the Export to UK name but is also the makers name

51 originally was 51% alcohol   and it should ALWAYS be drunk diluted  - - the order in France is always "Pastis cinquante et un avec l'eau et glacé"

We also buy Pineau from the Market in Jonzac and the stall holder always has bottles in a cooler full of ice for "Degustation Gratuit" Stephanie's favourite term anywhere  free tastings add to that the more you buy the more free tastings you get :LOL
