David, your blog is excellent, thank you.
We are in France at the moment, but are going into Italy soon, near the Italian Lakes, close to Brescia. We are thinking of having a day trip into Venice as it is easily accessible for where we are. What would you give as your top tips not to miss in Venice? I would love to know your views or anyone else who has visited for a day trip. I am sitting at the moment having a beer in Provence, the late sunshine, it has been beautiful today with temperatures up to 34 degrees.

Thanks for the kind comments about the Blog.
With regard to visiting Venice you are going to be fairly limited what you can do on a day visit unless you make it a long day. Are you going by train? If so take the Vaporetto from outside the station, number 2 line (I am sure that is the one, rather than the number 1 line which takes ages and grinds back an forth across the Grand Canal) that and this takes you down the Grand Canal to San Marco so you get a good view of all main sites. You then have plenty of time to have a look around St Marks. If you have time go to Burano which is the nicest of the Islands. You need to buy tickets before you get on a boat and they have the be validated. There are two main types either time limited like valid for 90 minutes or a day pass. I still maintain the only way to arrive in Venice is by boat but that is more difficult to do on a day trip that is why we always stay near Punta Sabbioni and catch the ferry across.

Hi David, Have not had a chance to read this blog (holidays, etc) until now, Got up early and with a cup of coffee I set aside an hour to go through the trip. Another excellent report and superb pictures. Venice has been a favorite destination of mine going back many years.
Canalletto being my favorite artist, I went to Venice many years ago and set my camera as close to the point where he painted many of his masterpieces and over the years not a lot has changed.
Such a shame was the wallet incident, But it comes across that it did not take the edge off to much. From the pics the weather looked good, As did the campsites. All in all a very enjoyable read and some notes taken should we venture this way again. Thanks, Chris.
