I tried putting coal in my tank, but it didn't work so I've gone back to petrol, so, yes, fuel does matter.Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

If my memory serves me corrctly, didn't the Germans run their vehicles and aircraft on fuel obtained from coal during WW2 Posted Image

I don't go back quite that far - but I think you're right because they had no oil reserves of their own and the prime reason they invaded USSR to get to their southern oilfields and the sole reason they invaded Africa to get to the oilfields in Libya and Iraq.

They were refining the coal as fuel to a much higher octane level, about 100, than our low octane "pool petrol" at around 80

Heaven is where the police are British, the cooks Italian, the mechanics German, the lovers French, and it is all organised by the Swiss.

I don't go back that far either Roger, just a fascination I have with certain aspects of history and matter related to the internal combustion engine.

I also well recall my Pop (who was in the Royal Engineers) telling me once about his division challenging another to a race a pair of stripped down battle damaged tanks fuelled on a strange brew which included some alcohol they had brewed when stationed close to Alexandria in the Sahara !!
