On a serious note, it must be devastating for those involved - we must hope that there are no injuries, or worse, and that "only" property and possessions are involved.

I guess if you apply the same logic as per the 'vans, the houses will also be insured. I think to have this happen to either your home or holiday retreat is equally as upsetting.

A deal struck between the government and Association of British Insurers in 2007 means that there are a few insurers who will insure homes and businesses on a floodplain, of which my old business was one. That deal expires 30th July 2013 and is yet to be renewed so, currently, anyone who owns a property on a floodplain after this date may not be able to insure it against flood damage. Around 200,000 were suspected to be at risk and I suspect that figure may have seen an increase over the weekend.

I agree it must be upsetting either way but if its the van at least you can go home to a warm dry house (hopefully)

We have a lot of trouble too and we're not that close to a river. We were flooded in 2007 (twice in a week), lost our caravan, and suffered a great deal of loss and stress over 18 month whilst it was all put back together. Insurers hiked up the premium to extortionate levels. Now we are 5 years on we can now change insurer hopefully for a better deal.
