Its the same old story We pick on the others who are running under a proper established set of rules, If we were to demand for a start FUEL at proper prices + a load of other things that dont just suite our greedy government then we would possibly get somewhere, If we are to create a level playing field we need to drop our end down Not tip others end up further.
To do all that we'd need to get rid of all our politicians and accept European ones - I'd vote for the lesser of two evils.

I suppose its down to the future, There are an awfull lot of people (and growing) who dont get £38 quid a day, But if our running costs were the same we would lose a lot of foreign transport over here, And bear in mind any Diesel in Europe can be swapped about to gain the best prices (border to border),IE Polish trucks dont have to buy fuel in Poland. I know of one VERY VERY large haulier in the UK Who has just made two hundred drivers redundant, They then offered 50 of them jobs back at a smaller depot ( they declined), A month or so later they closed the depot! The British haulage industry is ruined,

Charging non registered vehicles a "Road Tax" will never happen. It is not viable as there is a maximum under EU Law that countries can charge for "Road Tax" and the bare facts are it would cost more to enforce a charge than would be received in revenue. Now if you want to charge the non British haulier then a better more economical method would be to enforce a law the all vehicles have to be taxed to drive on our roads, then refund all those whose vehicles are registered in the UK. This type of charge has no upper limit, therefore would be fiducially viable.

Just a thought.

If you can get hold of yesterdays Daily Telegraph - Motoring Section - there is an excellent report on this proposal and an explanation of what is allowed (and not) by the EU.

PS No I am not going to copy it into the thread as that will infringe on the DTs copyright and unfortunately is does not show on their On-Line version.

Think a Vignette for all Motorways system as in Austria is the answer for all vehicles coming into the UK.  Which in Austria is run by organisation named ASFINAG. All the money taken is purely used for Road Building and Maintenance.  Their roads are second to none.  The Austrians buy a yearly Vignette which includes their Car Tax which is cheaper than our Car Tax.

I agree, in part, but the registered keeper of a vehicle isn't responsible for a driving offence committed by the driver such as speeding, driving without due care and attention or drink driving. It also doesn't prevent the driver from vanishing back to whence they came in the event of a summons.

Maybe not, but it will affect their ability to hold an "O" licence, thus to operate a business.

That is an incentive to break the law, therefore is against  the European laws on Driver's Hours.

As an aside, did you all know that the US Postal Service uses RHD vehicles - so they can use end of track letterboxes without getting out of their vehicle.

Some of the "conversion" engineering is eye-watering, involving chains & sprockets or timing belts to shift the steering wheel to the other side, retaining the LHD rack or box.  Somewhere I've got some pictures, if I can find them, I'll post them.

Is this announcement just a seed to plant the idea in the minds of the Truckers

They should just make it illegal to drive LHD trucks on UK roads

Does that not inspire the notion that right hand drive vehicles would then get banned on the continent? I also wouldn't want my caravan burnt by French HGV drivers at Calaise. Posted Image
