We are mad enough to be driving from Calais to Cadiz this summer (+ 2 children).  After crossing the boarder, Via Michelin recomends the E80 to Vitoria-Gastiez.  Can anyone recomend a site along that route?  Also, we've never driven/camped in Spain so any advice appreciated!

I don't know if the E80 is the most popular route, but if you click E-3 on this link it should come up with "Archie's" alternative/recommended route;

Wow, that is one heck of a drive.  Approx 20 hours.

If you are going to use EHU you will need a convertor

Not the route I'd be using and it's one I've done several times - although only as far as  Gibraltar.   I cross the border at Hendaye and take the A8/N1 to Burgos, then the A1 to Madrid and A4 onwards to Seville.   Except for a short section of AP1, the road is dual and toll free all the way from San Sebastian.   Also the route through France from Calais to the end of the N10 (south of Bordeaux) can be largely toll free.

Just to add to the above, we drove down to Malaga a couple of years ago with our 3 kids, would agree with the above poster, crossing the border and then heading for Burgos and down to Madrid is a pretty straightforward way to go. Have fun, hope you have a good time!

I agree with bobnchris about the route, but it has been a long time since I actualy did the journey,I do have relative who drive (often) from Santander and use the route to the west via Villadolid, Salamanca.  But if your looking for a good site in Spain then the One at Arunjez is a good stop off. it's a short way south of Madrid and is known as the Versaille of Spain, very old and only about 20 minute by car from Toledo, another really old city. The camping site at Arunjez is municipal and is next to a river and not near noisy  roads. It also takes camping cheques,ACSI etc. south of Cordober is CarlosIII at La Carlota on the A4/E5, just far enough off the motorway to be peaceful. There are not many camping sites near Cadiz city, Most are around Conil, but I suspect you already know that.
Hope this helps. Enjoy yourself.
