According to their web site the Frejus tunnel is €44.00 single journey for class 2 vehicles (which includes car/caravans under 3 metres high) and the tunnel is closed to HGVs every Sunday and most bank holidays. See http://www.tunneldufrejus.com/ there are English pages.

When I was asking about crossing into Italy from France I was initially thinking of the Frejus Tunnel but it was suggested that I might try the Mont du Cenis Pass which is a little further past the Frejust Tunnel. We might spend a few days in that area so that we can have a look and save €44!

Sounds like a good idea - I can think of better things to spend €44.00 on

The Mont Cenis pass is spectacular and well worth the trip, I've done it several times, Easy on the French side, snack bars by the lake at the top. Steeper, narrower and all downhill on the Italian side. Check the van brakes don't overheat as the van may tend to ride up behind the car causing the brakes to drag. Pays to stop a couple of times. The campsite at Modane at the French entrance to the tunnel is good for a stopover before or after the crossing but the town is not particularly pretty being a railhead for international transit. If you go to the lakes try Lago d'Iseo the campsite here camping Punta d'oro is superb and the town is very pretty, far less touristy than the bigger lakes.

November to mid-May but may be later this year with the snow conditions at present. Link here Mont Cenis shows if pass is open and here Mont Cenis route info for information.

Useful links thanks. Looks as if it could be touch and go for us as we would cross the pass in week 20 and it opens in week 19 according to here http://www.savoieroute.com/previsions_ouve...des_cols-7.html As they say it the opening date is dependant of local conditions. If we stay nearby it will be pretty obvious at the time whether its the Tunnel or the Pass!
As an aside its interesting to see that many of the famous mountain passes are open for quite limited periods during the year.

That is what I thought - so it will be the tunnel for us.
David - I think the reason so many passes are no longer kept clear is because there are now many tunnels - forces you to pay for their upkeep!
