We have recently upgraded form a 1991 Swift Callenger 440/4, which we have loved, to a Cristall Moorea 530EB which we love even more! I'm looking for a competitive insurance quote for the new van. So far I've had quotes from Saga and The Caravan Club but wondered if there are other companies, recommended by you good people, that I should contact.
I seem to remember reading about the NFU (?) National Farmers Union but I may be mistaken. Being a mere adult male I frequently am!

Worth giving Caravan Guard a try...they were not quite as competitive as my Saga quotes but were not far off...they often have a Stoptheft Security System included in their package.. 08450 717171 7 days a week ( till 1600 Sat/Sun)

Try them also on www.caravanguard.co.uk..they cover via AXA so they should be pretty good...

I use the NFU they are non profit and give good value.
They are based in Stratford upon Avon.

HI Ian

We use the C&C club not the cheapest but the terms and conditions are good, only2 security devices required, and a good reputation on settling claim ( but Ive not tested this )
The Hobby owners get a good deal at CIS ( Co-Op ) seam more relaxed on Imported vans , some of other insurance company's will not insure

You could also try www.caravanwise.co.uk

They offered the best quote this year for our Challenger at ?13k and there aren't too many security restrictions.
They came out fairly well in Practicle Caravans insurance review last year.

Cheers

You should get the May 2007 edition of "Caravan" magazine, it's out now, by the way.

They carried out an undercover investigation of the best and the worst caravan insurers.

The best was the Caravan Club (no surprises there). thumbup.gif

The worst was E&L (no surprises there either). fear.gif

A very interesting read, indeed. I would recommend it just for that article alone! yes.gif

You do need to be careful regarding the small print in the policies. We were with Caravan Guard who seemed fine but one day, having nothing better to do, I was browsing the policy and discovered that they specified that any wheel clamp fitted had to cover the wheel nuts. As I'd been driven demented by a Milenco a couple of years ago, I'd changed to a Bulldog which was Sold Secure approved, when fitted with locking wheel nuts (which we have). However, it didn't cover the wheel nuts. I could have any old bent bit of metal as long as it covered the nuts apparently........

Caravan Club is much more relaxed and slightly cheaper to boot.

The time you find out that the insurance is any good or not is when you need it. Our caravan was smashed by some pillock in a lorry about 18mths ago now and we'd only had the van 6mths. The Caravan Club were/are pretty good at getting on the case and sorting things out. The only problem I had was with the loss adjusters who I had to have a bit of a battle with over the level of the pay out. I got a pretty good deal in the end. Although it was still a lot less than the price I would have had to pay for the same van.

Be careful about the warranty when putting a value on the van. The dealer who sold the van to us had put the value of the warranty (?300) as part of the price of the van on the receipt. This meant we lost ?300 straight away and although I pointed out that I would have to pay for a warranty on the replacement van we never did get that bit back. And I had thought you were supposed to be returned to the position you were before the accident!

The best advice I would give and a tactic I always use now is to ask the insurers to value the van before agreeing the premium. This way you will pay a premium nearer to the value you'll get paid out on. Unless of course you're going to pay for a new for old policy.
