I was going to do the same, but Tom Tom 5's coverage of the area is a bit limited!!!!  I could use the Laptop, receiver and Autoroute 2006, but the wife gets a bit miffed at having the laptop on her knee.  So if there is a recommendation I'd rather follow that.

Thanks in anticipation

In a nutshell, fantastic, you'll love it. Do you have any children? we are off to the Ring of Kerry in August. I'd move there tomorrow if the wife would go but alas! enjoy.

The problem with, "Expertise: Making myself go deaf at the most opportune moments" means that one might never find out exactly why a question was asked! therefore never finding out everything  about a particular site and therefore remaining ignorant to what may be of benefit to them or not as the case may be!

I should apologies to you, sorry I didnt see my mate but just rang him....
He said they headed to Dublin on the "Holyhead-Dun Laoghaire Ferry at Hollyhead.
He said from there the used the M7 but he can not remember all the roads as he used the sat nav and stopped off en-route.
He did also use the RAC route finder from their website, just as a back-up to the sat nav.
Both took them where they wanted to go so... may be worth doing that.
I am going to use RAC map as well as the sat nav. thumbup.gif
He said the roads nearing the site where not as bad as he thought and the journey was straight forward. secret.gif

Hi Lee, This is a fantastic site and also for radiating out. For children they will love it to bits, but beware it is right on the waters edge and depending on their ages they may need to be supervised if playing by the waters edge. Mind blowing scenery and views. No doubt you will take a trip to Killarney from Ballylickey where the site is. Glengarriff is a small tourist village and Kenmare is really beautiful, you can get a boat trip out to seal island the kids will love it but this MUST be booked by the cottage where the boat sails from, there are signs to tell you where to go. DO NOT TRAVEL WITH YOUR CARAVAN FROM KILLARNEY TO BALLYLICKY ON THE N71 via Kenmare/Glengarriff to Ballylicky or vice versa. To cross the mountains by car is fabulous from Ballylicky to Killarney or vice versa is one thing, BUT NOT with a caravan on the back as you will find out when you make the journey solo with your car. If you take a trip down to Skibbereen there is also a boat trip out to Clear Island but it is not worth getting off the boat and waiting for the next boat back as there is little to do on the island until it returns to collect you. Have a good holiday, we are off on th 08th to Killarney and will be touring around all those places again, including The Ring of Beara, Ring of Kerry and Dingle where you can get a boat ot to see the Dolphin. Have a good one.

Just go into the AA Routes site (Ireland)...enter Dun Laoghaire - Bantry Bay and it gives a good route to follow.....didn't manage it to there on my last trip as in the month we were in Ireland there was too much to do...enjoy the cheap fuel ( about ?1 a gallon cheaper on diesel) but not the expensive blackstuff (?1 a pint more than here!)...

Personally I would not take this into account whatsoever.

Firstly, you say "just go into the AA Routes...... and it gives a good route to follow" how do you substantiate this when you have stated that you, "didn't manage to get there on your last trip" ? so how do you know that it is a good route? Secondly, if one is travelling from Rosslaire to Killarney for example, the AA Route shows the quickest route, but it is also the worst route! every campsitre owner will recommend that you travel via the Cork route because it is horendously better, likewise travelling from Killarney to Bantry, AA route shows the N71, but with a caravan it is a nightmare because of the very narrow roads and uneven surfaces across the mountains. You would have to have everything nailed or welded down inside of the 'van on that route. So I would not give advice about routes unless I have had personal experience of them let alone saying that "it gives a good route to follow" and in the next breath saying that you have never done it!!, this goes for sat nav as well! do sat nav's take into account that you are towing a caravan? best advice I could give is to speak to someone that has already been there and done it or to speak to the locals or site owners or tourist information centers pointing out that you are towing a caravan and ask what is the best route, they all have telephone's and addresses to write to.
