Really Chuffed!

After the 'Busy Weekend' posted in the Tech bit, you'd have thought I'b be sorted. However, the Stafford is not our ideal layout, as it's only the two of us. I happened to overhear a mate saying he was selling his 2001 Moonstone and went for a look.
The result is I bought it and after a week away at Stoneleigh Park for the LAnd Rover Max! show, I'm fully in love with this caravan. End washroom and side dinette is a fantastic set up for the two of us and the illusion of space works well for me.
Just wanted to share that, is all.

Automatic Vehicle

do you tow with an automatic??
how does it perform on hill starts.. etc.

i have a manual gear tdi 2.0 estate . i am finding that as i pull of when towing even more so if there is a slight incline, the car stalls this is very annoying. especially when on a roundabout or a road junction. im having to stay on the clutch longer or move off very slow. it seems the caravan feels the wieght then cuts out. due to this having happened a few times i am extra cautious and try to correct it . i dont like reving too much.
we havent had the car very long so i am hoping that it is me. this is only when towing.

my son drives an automatic and it performs very well i wondered if this would be better for towing. he says it is impossible to stall an automatic.

If You Have Bunks, Do You Travel With Them Up?

Hi,

Looking at some new to me vans at the weekend, and considering a double dinette version of a 6 berth van, with the pop up bunks at the rear. I'd like a view on if anyone regularly travels with these bunks made up??? Any pitfalls with doing so??

Thanks folks

Big Black Cat

When i was on holiday in late july stopping at a caravan club site Grin Low near Buxton my wife and i went out visiting places a..round the area.We went down as far as Maccelesfield and decided it was not my cup of tea, toobig for my liking so i set my satnav to take me back to the caravan site, anyway i dont know what happened but it took me miles away and didnot know what county it had taken me into.We ended up going up small lanes and to a lake called Redesmere where we stopped and took some photos of the birds,we then proceeded further up this small road and passed a sign with Fanshawe on it,we passed acouple of biuldings and on the right of me was a field with a arched small entrance to it.
It was in the field just before the arch that i spotted this large black cat(i was only going slow at the time because i like old biulding and countryside) it had its head pointing forward, shoulders haunched and its long tail right out behind it.I stopped the car and said to my wife i had just seen a big black cat to which she replied "SO WHAT" thinking i was talking about a big house cat.
I looked again and it was nowhere to be seen.Ihave heard stories about sightings elsewhere in the country and wondered if anybody else has seen any .

Mercedes C220 Estate Towing Experience

I have just returned from 10 days away towing with my new car (Mercedes C220 SE estate, 170bhp 2.1 diesel with 6 speed manual transmission), kerbweight without any extras is 1650kgs. With the added extras and towbar fitted its probably up to around 1680kgs. Another member of the site (Mike, MPN) reported severe instability problems with his identical car towing a similar weight caravan. I was towing a 2010 Swift Charisma 550 with an MTPLM of 1495kgs. As the match of 88% was better than I've ever had for a long time (previous cars have always been around 93%) it should have been better, but Mike's experiences were always at the back of my mind.

So, with a mere 350 miles on the clock (and MBZ reassurance that it didn't need running in before towing) we set off on an approximate 250 mile trip to Tintagel, Cornwall (Trewethett Farm CC site). The journey down was in wet, windy weather, along the M42 then M5. The first thing I noticed was that the rear suspension is definitely softer than my previous car (2006 Passat). With the VW it was rock solid when being passed by HGV's, coaches etc. With the Merc, there WAS a gentle rock, only slight but the softer suspension was noticed. However, I have to say that it towed like a dream. We towed into a head wind for most of the journey & returned an eye-watering 24mpg. , although I did have three bikes on the roof! The foot operated parking brake IS a right P.I.T.A but the hill-start assist holds the car for a couple of seconds after you release the footbrake which helps.

After Tintagel we moved onto Broad Park CC site near Modbury, Devon and the car had to tow the caravan off a very water logged uphill pitch at Tintagel. Fearing wheel spin from the RWD I took it gently and was pleasantly surprised, it coped fine.

Reversing onto the flat pitch at Broad Park produced the worst clutch smell I've ever come across. Clutch slip to get ont the pitch was minimal as it was flat, I'll put it down to it being new..... The return journey from Broad Park was in much calmer conditions, very little wind and warm sunny weather. The 210 mile journey home returned a brilliant MPG of 32.5mpg!

Altogether, a very nice car. I've never had the same make of car twice, but when the lease runs out in three years & I have to chose another, I could well be picking another very similar (but an auto this time to make hill starts easier!).

Holburne Cotswold

Just got back from 5 days @ Holburne Cotswolds - 5 miles from Cirencester and in the middle of the Cotswolds Water Park.

Really enjoyed it - we cancelled a stay at the CC Moreton in Marsh site to go here and that was definately the right move. Loads for the kids to do with the indoor pool, a small bowling alley, indoor play area and large out door one.

Personally I can do without the bar and "entertainment" - shite acts and bingo bingo bingo but the touring fields stacked up on their own without this - decent shop on site and big pitches - we had hedges on both sides and enough room to set up a badminton net on our own pitch next to the awning.

No noise @ night, lots of kids but no problems at all - could it be that because there was stuff for them todo they didn't get bored? - and NO DOGS - so other than the stage act's no sh*t either.

Overall definately a site we'll be going back to.
